PhD position in social acceptance of artificial and sustainable fuels100%, 1.8.2024The Sustainability Research Group at the University of Basel is looking for one PhD candidate to investigate social acceptance of artificial and sustainable fuels.Your positionThe political support of conventional biofuels has illustrated that national legislation (e.g., in the USA or the EU) has global socio-economic as well as environmental implications. Aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, several political institutions have launched strategies to foster the use of sustainable fuels and platform chemicals (SFPCs), i.e. carbon-free fuels (e.g., through hydrogen or ammonia) or carbon-neutral fuels (e.g., fuels containing non-fossil carbon from biomass). Within the framework of the project, sustainable fuels (SF) are defined to be fuels that meet a set of environmental and social sustainability criteria. While most SFPCs are expected to be imported to Switzerland, implications on international markets, social impacts (e.g., food security), and indirect environmental effects (e.g., global land-use change) depend on the technology pathway and are unknown. The goal of the PhD position is to contribute to a better understanding of the societal perspective in relation to sustainable fuels. The works will be embedded in the Swiss Federal Office of Agriculture SWEET-funded project "ReFuel.ch". Specifically, the PhD will examine social acceptance of different technological pathways and possible related environmental and socio-economic impacts in Switzerland. In order to do so, there is a need for both qualitative and quantitative assessment of consumer attitudes and demand intention (acceptance) for sustainable fuels and platform chemicals (SFPC), to understand assessment pathways and uptake scenarios. Expected tasks include undertaking two online surveys (one including an experiment) to identify preferences with respect to different identified and legally feasible policy options, general acceptance, attitudes and other potential determinants of future acceptance. In combination with others, a policy report outlining best practices on SFPC promotion and implications for Switzerland will be prepared. Research activities will form the basis of multiple academic research papers for a PhD.The appointment is scheduled to begin on August 1, 2024.Your profileApplicants must possess an academic qualification (MSc/MA) in the social sciences, and should have experience with relevant empirical methods (particularly quantitative research skills are expected and qualitative research skills are desired).A proficient level in English and German, excellent communication skills and a willingness to collaborate are essential. We offer youThe position is for an initial period of one year, renewable for another three years after positive evaluation. As the research project is a collaborative effort between 16 research teams across Switzerland and hosted at the very interdisciplinary Sustainability Research Group of the University of Basel, you will be able to work in a scientifically highly stimulating environment. You will join a supportive, collaborative and cooperative work environment with regular meetings and exchanges. We support participation in a broad and well-established international research network. Further, we offer modern research facilities and an excellent scientific environment at Basel University. Salary and social benefits are provided according to the University of Basel rules. You will be co-supervised by Dr Iljana Schubert, Dr Annika Sohre & Professor Janina Grabs (appointed head of the Sustainability Research Group).

Postdoc position: quantitative biology of non-growing bacteria100%How does life emerge from molecules and cells? This is the central question that motivates us. With curiosity and passion, we investigate the entire spectrum ranging from the atom to the organism. The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the world's leading life sciences institutes. With 32 groups and 500 employees, we are a dynamic and international research community that has spawned many fundamental discoveries in biology and medicine as well as several Nobel Laureates. Become part of our community!A postdoctoral position is available in the research group of Prof. Erik van Nimwegen. The position is initially for two years, funded by an SNF grant, but may be extended upon mutual agreement. The postdoctoral fellow will be supervised by T. Julou and E. van Nimwegen. The position is available immediately and priority will be given to candidates that can start relatively soon.Your positionThe topic of this project concerns Escherichia coli during stationary phase, as a case study of non-growing bacteria. Although bacteria in the wild likely spend the majority of their time in non-growing states, relatively little is known about cell physiology and gene expression in such states, especially at the single-cell level. Our lab uses novel quantitative approaches, such as the one we recently developed to quantitatively track growth and gene expression with single-cell resolution in bacteria exposed to controlled environmental changes [1, 2]. We are interested in both physiological and evolutionary aspects of stationary phase: What are the different physiological states that can be attained during stationary phase? What is the extent and dynamics of cell heterogeneity during stationary, and how does this heterogeneity affect survival, stress-resistance, and the ability of cells to regrow when exposed to new nutrients? Are there evolutionary trade-off(s) between growth-related traits and starvation-related traits? To answer such questions, the candidate is expected to combine experimental techniques from molecular biology, genetics, video-microscopy, microfluidics and microfabrication, with cutting-edge data analysis and modelling techniques, which may be undertaken in collaboration with theoretical researchers in the lab. The project will be tailored to the interests and skills of the successful candidate, and will take advantage of several recent results already obtained in our group.Your profileApplicants should have completed a PhD in a relevant field such as biophysics, quantitative biology, microbiology, or evolution. Previous experience with microscopy and microfluidics will be valued. The candidate should have demonstrated experience in programming for data analysis, and/or in mathematical modelling. We offer you

The candidate will be immersed in a vibrant cross-disciplinary and collaborative environment with opportunities for further developing and growing his/her/their scientific interests. Within a supportive and integrative environment, the candidate will benefit from internal trainings in state-of-the-arts immunological techniques (high dimensional flow cytometry), next generation epigenomic approaches (scRNAseq, ATACseq), and access to the large spectrum of technological platforms available at the Department of Biomedicine. Careful mentorship and respect for human values, including diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, are driving forces of our group, ensuring an ideal environment for the candidate to develop, succeed, and plan the next steps of their career. Finally, the University of Basel offers a competitive environment, including attractive salaries, comprehensive social benefits and family-friendly options.
